Abbeyfield Australia

The Abbeyfield Story

In 1981, the Abbeyfield Society (Australia) Limited, a not for profit company, limited by guarantee, was incorporated and the first Australian house opened in 1986. The Australian society, in its philosophy, objectives and general mode of operation, developed from the United Kingdom model but was adapted to Australian conditions.

Abbeyfield housing has traditionally supported older people not ready for Aged Care who want secure housing, independence and the company of others.  In the late 1990's the Abbeyfield Australia model changed to include independent community housing for young people with mild disabilities who wanted to live independently from their parents in a secure community.  This change in the model was a first for Abbeyfield internationally.  Abbeyfield Australia have 5 houses across the ACT, NSW and SA for young people with disabilities.

There has always been enthusiastic support for the Abbeyfield concept in Australia.
