Castlemaine Open Gardens for Abbeyfield
It’s spring and garden visiting time again! As there is no Festival of Gardens in Castlemaine (Vic) this year, four local town gardens will be open during the Melbourne Cup weekend to raise money for a new community project, a Castlemaine Abbeyfield House.
An Abbeyfield House is a group house in which 10 - 12 older residents live independently within the dynamic of a shared supportive house. The residents ‘come and go’ as they please, socialise with other residents as much as desired, enjoy the support of a live-in housekeeper and remain engaged with the community. The planned Castlemaine Abbeyfield House will be developed in conjunction with Abbeyfield Australia, a national not for profit community housing provider.
This is the first fund raiser for the Abbeyfield Castlemaine Branch committee which was established late in 2010. The committee has the task of raising approximately $2.5 million to build a comfortable and attractive house for 12 residents and live-in housekeeper, each with their own sitting room, bedroom and ensuite as well as the communal kitchen, dining room and sitting room. Plenty of community support will be needed to achieve this.
Over the four days of the Melbourne Cup long weekend there will be three gardens open every day between 10am and 4pm. The entry fee for each garden will be $5 per adult, children free. The gardens involved are :-
Camp House, 5 Yandell St. Open Sat. Sun. Mon. Tues.
Cole’s Cottage, 49 Hargraves St. Open Sat. Sun.
Cluain Mhor, 3 Saint St. Open Sat. Sun. Mon. Tues.
Meanderings, 62 Kennedy St. Open Mon. Tues.
All gardens are located within walking distance of the Castlemaine CBD.
